Our college's Active and Healthy Aging Community organized a special simulation event to raise awareness about aging and disability experiences as part of the October 1st International Day of Older Persons.
The event, organized by the Community's Academic Advisor, Lecturer Dr. Sultan Kılıç, aimed for participants to understand the physical and sensory difficulties that may be encountered during aging and disability by experiencing them.
As part of the event, applications were carried out to allow participants to experience various difficulties that may arise in daily life activities, such as mobility restrictions and sensory losses like vision and hearing. Through these applications, participants were enabled to recognize the challenges that elderly and disabled individuals may face in their daily lives not only theoretically but also through experience.
Especially the participation of our college's administrative staff, in addition to students, contributed to the development of a common awareness among individuals with different roles and responsibilities regarding aging and disability.
In the evaluations conducted with participants after the simulation, the importance of accessible living spaces, the support of independence, the physical and social barriers to community participation, and the necessity of an empathetic approach towards elderly and disabled individuals were discussed.
The event aimed to raise awareness of the daily life experiences of elderly and disabled individuals, strengthen empathy skills, and highlight the importance of accessible, inclusive, and dignified living spaces.
The event organized by our college's Active and Healthy Aging Community ended after participants shared their experiences and evaluations were made.
